How will I be informed about advisories and when they are lifted?

Water advisories are distributed to residents whose homes are connected to the municipal water supply system.

    Via a door hanger

The city distributes door hangers (mini-posters) to all affected homes. A second door hanger is distributed when a boil-water advisory or a drinking water avoidance advisory is lifted.

Why am I receiving these advisories and how long will they remain in effect?

    Preventive boil-water advisory

A preventive boil-water advisory is issued when an accidental situation affects the quality of drinking water (the advisory is usually preventive, pending the results of water tests*).

Effective until the city issues a notice informing residents that the boil-water advisory has been lifted. In general, a boil-water advisory is lifted within 48 to 72 hours.

    Mandatory boil-water advisory

Mandatory boil-water advisories are very seldom issued. They are issued when tests detect the presence of bacteria in the drinking water.

Valid until the test results are known. If the tests are negative and the water is deemed compliant with applicable standards, the mandatory boil-water advisory is lifted and residents can safely drink the tap water again.

    Drinking water avoidance advisory

A drinking water avoidance advisory is issued when tap water may be contaminated by a chemical harmful to human health. Please note that this type of situation is extremely rare.

Valid until the test results are known. If the tests are negative and the water is deemed compliant with applicable standards, the drinking water avoidance advisory is lifted and residents can safely drink the tap water again.

    Water service interruption

Work operations on the water supply system in your area may require the temporary interruption of drinking water service to residential homes.

In general, residents receive a door hanger notifying them about the planned water service interruption period, which can vary depending on the nature of the work being carried out.

Lifting of drinking water avoidance advisory, 32 KB

    • Drinking water, water for beverages, drinking water for pets
    • Water used to prepare water bottles and baby foods
    • Water used to wash and prepare food with or without cooking

    • Dispose of ice cubes (don’t forget to empty the refrigerator reservoir) as well as drinks and foods prepared with tap water on the date of the advisory.

Water service interruption and residential service connection flushing advisory, 34 KB

When there is a water service interruption, the water mains are disinfected during or immediately after work operations are completed. In spite of all the precautions taken by the city, it is possible that your water will be yellowish brown in colour or that it will give off a strong smell of chlorine.

Store drinking water for domestic use.

After the time indicated on the notice, rinse your pipes by letting the cold water run in the bath for about 15 minutes or until it runs clear and odourless again. If your waste water goes to a septic tank rather than a municipal sewer, let the water run outdoors if possible.

If you observe lower flow from a tap equipped with an aerator, simply unscrew it and rinse it. Particles could become lodged inside of it during rinsing. Use the water as you normally would as soon as you finish rinsing for 15 minutes.
