Radicalization prevention
Radicalization can lead to violence. That’s why the City takes action to prevent it.
Understanding radicalization leading to violence
A person undergoing radicalization gradually distances themselves from their family, friends, and colleagues. They adopt extreme beliefs that may push them to use violence to defend a cause.
How to help someone at risk?
Are you worried about someone? Here’s how to maintain contact.
- Listen without judgment, with respect and empathy. This helps build a trusting relationship with the person at risk.
- Avoid confronting their ideas and beliefs. They may withdraw further.
- Choose the right time and a quiet place to discuss openly.
The city of Laval’s strategy against radicalization
Laval’s strategies aim to strengthen the capacity of regional stakeholders to detect, prevent, and intervene in the field to combat radicalization.
Key partners and actors in the region work together to share best practices, providing optimal support to Laval’s population and implementing targeted prevention measures.
The action strategies developed by the steering committee are inspired by the Quebec government’s action plan and are based on five main principles:
- Establishing an approach centered on Laval’s values.
- Improving intervention methods.
- Informing, raising awareness, and providing training.
- Developing a partnership and coordination approach.
- Fostering a culture of communication.
