Contacting the Laval Police Department

If you are a victim of or a witness to a criminal event, do not hesitate to contact us at any time. If you are not in an emergency situation, but would like to reach the SPL, you can contact us as follows.

Information to have when calling 911

Be prepared to answer the following questions so that the department can give you the help that you need.

  1. Location of the emergency, including the address or intersection where the event occurred.
  2. Nature of the emergency.
  3. Details of the emergency, for example:
Physical description of the person suspected of committing a crime.
    Description of a potential fire.
    – Description of injuries suffered and symptoms experienced by a person in a medical emergency situation.
  4. Name and telephone number where you can be reached.

Three important things to know about when contacting 911

  1. Call centre agents will dispatch emergency response personnel while asking you questions.
  2. Follow the instructions given during the call.
  3. Do not hang up until you are asked to.

911 call centre agents deserve respect and courtesy

Any form of aggression toward them delays the timely mobilization of emergency response personnel that you or someone in your family may require.

When should you call 911 outside of an emergency?

  • For traffic accidents (even if you are not among the people involved).
  • To report excessive noise.
  • To report the presence of an abandoned vehicle on a public road.
  • To report a vandalized car (if there is more than $5,000 in damages)
  • To schedule an appointment with a police officer to turn in a firearm or ammunition.
  • To request assistance from police personnel. The decision to dispatch police will be evaluated based on the nature of the call and the degree of urgency. The SPL will call you back before police are dispatched.

If you are the victim of a theft or a misdemeanour under $5,000, you can complete an online police report without having to contact 911.

Did you dial 911 by mistake? Whatever you do, don’t hang up! The call centre agent may determine that there is an emergency and dispatch a police officer to your location. Instead, stay on the line and simply explain what happened.

Three things to know about 911

  1. All calls to 911 are recorded, and the recordings are kept for a period of 48 months. The bylaw concerning 911 emergency call centre standards requires the establishment of a call recording system.
  2. 911 collaborates with an interpretation service that offers services in more than 200 languages and dialects, available at all times. 911 personnel speak French and English, and many staff members also master a third language.
  3. When a person with a hearing impairment uses a teletypewriter, the system automatically permits written communication with emergency call centre personnel.

In the event of an accident without injury, you can complete a joint report if your vehicles are not blocking traffic and do not pose a risk of further accidents.

In this case, it is not necessary to request a police presence on the scene.

In the event of an accident with a parked vehicle or an inanimate object:

  • Try to find and notify the owner of the damaged property.
  • If you do not find anyone nearby, contact 911 to report an accident.
