Prevention of radicalization

Radicalization can lead to violence. That’s why the City of Laval is taking action to prevent it.

Understanding radicalization leading to violence

A self-radicalized person slowly withdraws from their family, friends and colleagues. They adopt extreme beliefs that that can drive them to use violence in defence of a cause.

How to help a person at risk?

Are you concerned about someone you know? Here’s how you can maintain contact.

  • Listen without judgment, with respect and empathy. This helps foster a relationship of trust with the person at risk.
  • Do not confront the person about their ideas and beliefs, as they could react by withdrawing even more.
  • Choose the right time to open a discussion in a quiet place.

The City of Laval’s strategy against radicalization

Laval’s strategies aim to ensure that regional actors are better able to detect, prevent and take action to fight radicalization.

Key regional partners and actors work together to, consolidate best practices aimed at providing optimal support to Laval residents and implementing targeted prevention measures.

The action strategies developed by the steering committee  take their inspiration from the Government of Quebec’s action plan and are based on five main orientations:

Establish an approach based on Laval’s values.

  • Improve interventions.
  • Inform, raise awareness and train.
  • Develop a partnership and consensus-building approach.
  • Foster a culture of communication.
