Before completing the report

The police report can be submitted online provided that certain conditions are met. If you do not meet one of these conditions, please contact 911 to submit your report.

An email address is required to complete an online police report, since most communications are carried out by email.

There should only be one complainant per event. If you are the victim of a theft of a property item that you co-own, such as a shed, you can complete an application, but only one owner should be named as the complainant.

You have six months to report an event by completing the online police report.

In the presence of a witness or a suspected person, contact 911 instead.

What is a witness?

A person who saw someone commit a crime and who is able to accurately describe or recognize the person responsible for the crime.

What is a suspected person?

The person responsible for a crime, who was seen by you or by a witness and who is known or can be accurately described.

Here are some examples of situations in which you cannot file an online report, along with recommended courses of action.

  • For a car or license plate theft, contact 911.

Many details can be provided to the best of your knowledge:

  • If you don’t know the exact location of the theft, you can complete the online report indicating only the intersection or the name of the public or commercial place where the incident occurred (e.g., Centre de la nature).
  • If you don’t know the exact time of the incident, indicate the date and an approximate time (e.g., between 8 p.m. and 7 a.m.).
  • If you don’t know the exact amount of the damages, enter an approximate amount in the designated box.
  • Registering the serial number is recommended but not required. If the stolen item is recovered, its serial number will make it possible to return it to you.

Submitting a false report to police is considered a criminal offence

The online police report cannot be modified once it has been submitted. Once you have submitted the report, you can provide additional information to the agent assigned to your case file.

In the event of a technical problem or any other problem with this service, you can report the incident:

  • By calling  911.

What are the next steps after the report is submitted?

The Service de police de Laval will process your report within five business days in accordance with the following steps:

  1. You will receive a first email acknowledging receipt of your report. This email will contain your temporary file number.
  1. You will receive a second email informing you that an agent will process and review your report.
  1. If you have any additional information to share with the agent, this is the time to do so.

Reports are sent on a confidential basis

The information contained on the online forms that you complete is treated as confidential, in accordance with the requirements of the Act respecting access to information held by public bodies and the protection of personal information.

For your insurance

If you plan to file a claim with your insurance company, wait until you receive your permanent event number (LVL) and your temporary event number (RPL) before you file the claim.
