Drive carefully near school zones

Around schools, be extra careful to keep our children safe. Each season brings its own challenges and things to keep in mind

At all times, near schools

At all times, near schools :

  • bey the signs and pay attention to what’s going on around you.
  • Stop at pedestrian crossings.
  • Respect the 30 km/h speed limit.
  • Follow instructions and be patient when crossing guards are helping children cross the street.
  • Stop your vehicle five metres from a school bus when its flashing lights are on and its stop sign opens.

The Service de police de Laval does extra patrols near schools at the start of each season

In August, back to school

Teach your children about safe behaviour

If you are driving your child to school:

  • Use drop-off zones, if available. Park in designated or appropriate areas.
  • Avoid blocking traffic and driveways. It’s sometimes better to park your car one or two blocks from the school.
  • Follow the crossing guards’ instructions and be patient.
  • Let your child get out of the car on their own to encourage independence.

If your child walks to school:

  • Find a safe route together.
  • Encourage your child to be aware of their surroundings and to be careful on sidewalks and when crossing the street.
  • If your child cannot walk all the way to school, park on a street near the school.

In November, days get shorter

  • Follow the crossing guards’ instructions and be patient.
  • Make sure your child is visible at all times.
  • Make eye contact with the people you share the road with. Never assume that they notice you, whether you’re on foot, on a bike or in a car.
  • Cross the road where indicated and pay attention to the signs.
  • Remember that people crossing on foot always have priority over drivers.

Back to school in January

  • Slow down and adapt your driving to the environment.
  • Make sure to clear all the snow off your vehicle before you leave home. Even for short trips, you need the best possible visibility.
  • Be vigilant and avoid distractions. The school zone extends beyond the school grounds.
  • Make sure your child is visible (wears colourful clothing or reflective strips).
  • Remember that cell phone use is prohibited and is punishable under the Highway Safety Code.
  • When you’re walking around, pay attention to motorists and cyclists and make sure they see you. Don’t hold and look at your electronic devices. Tell your teenagers that it’s better to use just one ear bud when they are listening to music while walking outdoors.
  • Keep in mind that heavy vehicles don’t have the same blind spots as cars. When you see a snow-clearing truck, bus or other heavy vehicle, be sure to make eye contact with the driver. If you can’t see them, chances are they can’t see you either. When in doubt, let them pass.

April, safety on your bike and on foot

  • Let your child use active transportation (walking, biking, etc.) to get to school whenever possible.
  • Find a safe route together or review it in the spring.
  • Remember that pedestrians and cyclists have priority over motorists.
  • Cyclists can use the bike paths, open from April 15 to November 15, or ride on the right-hand side of the road.
  • If you are driving, reduce your speed even if there is no more snow. Keep in mind that you are in a school zone.
