In Laval, firefighters also play the role of first responders. Their mission is to provide first aid in the event of a medical emergency and to ensure care until an ambulance arrives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is the first responder service?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

First responders are the first to be called to assist a person in distress and stabilize their condition until the ambulance arrives. They work in close collaboration with Urgences-Sant\u00e9 paramedics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Laval, first responders provide Level 1 service (PR-1). They intervene in cases such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n
  • cardiorespiratory arrest or a high risk of cardiorespiratory arrest<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • airway obstruction<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • severe allergic reaction (anaphylactic shock) <\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • opioid overdose<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    What you can do while waiting for emergency services<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    You can facilitate the work of emergency first responders as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \n
    • Listen to the emergency dispatcher\u2019s instructions over the telephone and answer their questions. Emergency first responders will be mobilized as the person continues speaking to you.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Unlock the doors.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Turn on the outdoor lights.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Move large objects away from the entrance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • If it is winter, clear the snow and ice from the outside door.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Make sure the person waiting has the following items:
      • Health insurance card<\/li><\/ul>\n
          \n
        • Medications<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        • If the victim is a child or if you have no choice but to bring a young child with you, collect the items you need for a stay at the emergency unit:\n

          • diapers<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          • bibs<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          • snacks<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          • comfort object, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

              Never put your safety in danger by attempting to rescue another person. If you don\u2019t have the necessary training, follow the instructions of the 911 call centre agent, who will advise you on the proper course of action to take.<\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n\n\n\n

              What to do while waiting for emergency services in a private seniors\u2019 residence<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
                \n
              • When expecting an emergency first response team, staff at private seniors\u2019 residences (PSR) follow additional protocols to facilitate their work and respect the dignity of residents.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
              • Check if the patient has a do not resuscitate order<\/strong>. This information must be communicated to emergency first responders when they arrive.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
              • If your PSR has an elevator, reserve it until the emergency response team has left the premises. Several return trips may be required.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
              • Stay available to answer questions and provide information on the resident\u2019s identity and medical history.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
              • Inform all residents that a fire department vehicle will be arriving, explaining that there is a medical <\/strong>emergency, as some residents may have the reflex to evacuate the building.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
              • After the firefighters leave, check to make sure that no resident has left the building or is outdoors.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n
