You have a smoke alarm, but is it working properly? Did you know that certain situations require you to install a carbon monoxide detector? In case of a minor fire, do you know how to use a portable fire extinguisher? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Smoke alarm <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The municipal regulations <\/a>require that your home be equipped with a smoke alarm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to choose it?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

All residential buildings built before 1985 must be replaced with smoke alarms that have a non-removable, long-life lithium battery lasting 10 years, <\/strong>replacing the older 9-volt battery models.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Was your home built before 1985 but equipped with electric smoke alarms? This building is not affected by the regulatory change. Residential buildings protected by hardwired smoke detectors connected to a private monitoring station are also exempt from this new regulation. However, floors that do not have a detector connected to a monitoring center must be equipped with smoke alarms that comply with regulations.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Electrically wired smoke alarms  <\/h4>\n\n\n\n

In buildings constructed after 1985, all smoke alarms must be hardwired and permanently connected to an electrical circuit according to the Quebec Building Code. Some models require manual replacement of the backup battery. A light indicator shows whether it is operational. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ionization smoke alarm<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

An ionization smoke alarm is ideal for bedrooms and hallways, as it is more sensitive to vapour and smoke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Photoelectric smoke alarm<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

A photoelectric smoke alarm is ideal near a kitchen or a bathroom, as it is less sensitive to vapour and smoke. This helps limit false alarms caused by moisture vapour and cooking smoke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
