Every year, too many people burn themselves or cause fires while cooking. In Laval, 22% of fires are related to cooking, with 71% caused by overheated oil.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why are there so many cooking fires?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In Quebec, more than half of residential fires are caused by one of these three human errors: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Distraction\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Negligence\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Misuse of equipment\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    To avoid ending up with a burnt-down house<\/a>, it\u2019s important to stay vigilant.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    How to prevent a cooking fire\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Here are some tips to cook safely: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    • Don\u2019t fry in a pot filled with oil. Use a CSA or ULC certified deep fryer or air fryer with a thermostat instead.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Avoid wearing loose clothing.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Stay close to the stove while cooking.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Avoid distractions from your phone or TV, for example.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Use a timer.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Use oven mitts.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Use pans with a handle guard.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Keep pot handles turned toward the center of the stove.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Make sure children stay away from the stove.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      • To put out a fire in a pan or pot, place a proper lid on the container. Then, safely turn off the stove.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • Never move a pan or pot that\u2019s on fire.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • Never throw anything on the fire, especially not water on hot oil.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • Even if you think the fire is out, don\u2019t take any risks\u2014call 911.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n
