In Laval, 22% of fires are related to cooking, with 71% caused by overheated oil.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why are there so many cooking fires?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In Quebec, more than half of residential fires are caused by one of these three human errors:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Distraction\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Negligence\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Misuse of equipment\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>To avoid ending up with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=6oiFRI66Tlk&amp;feature=youtu.be\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">burnt-down house<\/a>, it\u2019s important to stay vigilant.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to prevent a cooking fire\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some tips to cook safely:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Don\u2019t fry in a pot filled with oil. Use a CSA or ULC certified deep fryer or air fryer with a thermostat instead.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoid wearing loose clothing.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stay close to the stove while cooking.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoid distractions from your phone or TV, for example.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use a timer.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use oven mitts.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use pans with a handle guard.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keep pot handles turned toward the center of the stove.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make sure children stay away from the stove.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4 things to do when a fire starts on the stove\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>To put out a fire in a pan or pot, place a proper lid on the container.
