Learn how to protect your family and your property.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to prepare in the event of an alert<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"before\">A heavy rain, thunderstorms or high wind alert warns you about the potential dangers. Take the following measures immediately:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-vortex-blocks-accordions-group block-accordions-group accordion-container is-style-no-margin-top\">\n<section class=\"wp-block-vortex-blocks-accordion-item accordion ac\" id=\"before-the-event\"><div class=\"accordion__accordion\"><button class=\"accordion__header-row accordion-toggle ac-header ac-trigger\"><p class=\"accordion__header__title\">Before the event<\/p><span class=\"accordion__header__icon\" role=\"presentation\"><span class=\"plus\"><\/span><\/span><\/button><div class=\"accordion__sub-rows wysiwyg ac-panel\" role=\"region\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Wind<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Secure or store any outdoor items that could blow away in the wind (temporary car shelter, garden furniture, barbecue, recycling bags or garbage bins).&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Identify a safe place inside your home (basement or room on the ground floor, such as a washroom, wardrobe or hallway).&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cancel all non-essential travel.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rain<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Regularly clean your gutters (remove dead leaves and branches) to ensure proper water drainage. Direct them toward a surface that allows water to soak into the ground (lawn, flower bed, sand).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make sure storm drains stay clear. Do not place your fallen leaves on the street : they can accumulate and block the drains.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check and maintain your home\u2019s backwater valves.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><\/section>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"wp-block-vortex-blocks-accordion-item accordion ac\" id=\"during-the-event\"><div class=\"accordion__accordion\"><button class=\"accordion__header-row accordion-toggle ac-header ac-trigger\"><p class=\"accordion__header__title\">During the event<\/p><span class=\"accordion__header__icon\" role=\"presentation\"><span class=\"plus\"><\/span><\/span><\/button><div class=\"accordion__sub-rows wysiwyg ac-panel\" role=\"region\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Bring your family to the safe location identified.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In case of wind, move away from doors and windows.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Monitor the situation as it develops via weather alerts, radio and television updates, and the city\u2019s website and social media platforms.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>During heavy rainfall and in the hours that follow, avoid using water-intensive appliances to ensure the proper functioning of your backwater valve and reduce the risk of sewer backup. Postpone the use of your dishwasher, washing machine, shower, and bathtub.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">If you are outdoors&nbsp;during a high wind event<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Seek refuge in a solid building.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>As a last resort, shelter in a ditch or on hollow ground, lie face down, and use your hands to protect your head.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><\/section>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"wp-block-vortex-blocks-accordion-item accordion ac\" id=\"after-the-storm\"><div class=\"accordion__accordion\"><button class=\"accordion__header-row accordion-toggle ac-header ac-trigger\"><p class=\"accordion__header__title\">After the storm<\/p><span class=\"accordion__header__icon\" role=\"presentation\"><span class=\"plus\"><\/span><\/span><\/button><div class=\"accordion__sub-rows wysiwyg ac-panel\" role=\"region\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Exercise caution.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Move around debris.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Never touch downed power lines.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Report outages to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hydroquebec.com\/nous-joindre\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hydro-Qu\u00e9bec<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><\/section>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to prepare for a disaster<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Prepare to be autonomous. In the event of a disaster, make sure you have enough supplies to meet your needs and those of your family for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.laval.ca\/en\/public-security\/emergency-measures-civil-security\/disaster-preparedness\/how-prepare-for-disaster\/\">a minimum 72 hours<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What are the potential consequences?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>High winds occur during an atmospheric depression or a local weather event and are often accompanied by rain, glazed frost, or storm surges.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These events can cause:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>prolonged power outages&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>uprooted trees&nbsp;or falling branches<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>roof damage&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>flooding&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>landslides&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>dam failures&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>forest fires<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n  <div class=\"notification-message notification-message__bg-alert-circle\" \n  >\n   <div class=\"notification-message__inner-container\">\n    <div class=\"notification-message__heading\">\n              <span class=\"notification-message__icon icon icon-alert-circle\"><\/span>\n                    <p class=\"notification-message__title\">Tornado scale\u00a0<\/p>\n          <\/div>\n          <div class=\"notification-message__text\">\n        <p>The Fujita scale (F0 to F5) measures the intensity of tornados in accordance with the damage that they cause.
