Around twenty temporary protective measures have been installed at the targeted sites.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A pedestrian walkway has been installed over the culvert on Comtois Street.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dike removal will begin only once all risk has been eliminated, in a context of slow recession.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make sure your dock is properly secured and tied down, as well as any items stored on your property that could be carried away by rising water levels.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you observe an unusual situation, dial 311 or submit a request through <a href=\"https:\/\/mondossier.laval.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mon dossier<\/a> to report it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We recommend that you take the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.laval.ca\/en\/public-security\/emergency-measures-civil-security\/emergency-situations\/floods\/#risk\">necessary steps to protect yourself<\/a>. Use the search tool to find an address.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please check this page regularly to follow the evolution of the situation and for instructions in case of flood risk.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"risk\"><strong>When and where is there a risk of flooding?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"how-prepare\">Certain areas are more prone to flooding, particularly those near rivers. Flooding often occurs during the spring freshet between March 15 and May 15. The flood risk is always higher in the presence of violent weather events, including high winds, storms, tornados and hurricanes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sudden heavy rainfall and severe thunderstorms, which are more frequent in summer due to hot and humid weather, can cause localized flooding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-vortex-blocks-accordions-group block-accordions-group accordion-container is-style-no-margin-top\">\n<section class=\"wp-block-vortex-blocks-accordion-item accordion ac\" id=\"stronghow-to-prepare-for-the-risk-of-flooding-strong\"><div class=\"accordion__accordion\"><button class=\"accordion__header-row accordion-toggle ac-header ac-trigger\"><p class=\"accordion__header__title\"><strong>How to prepare for the risk of flooding<\/strong><\/p><span class=\"accordion__header__icon\" role=\"presentation\"><span class=\"plus\"><\/span><\/span><\/button><div class=\"accordion__sub-rows wysiwyg ac-panel\" role=\"region\">\n<p>There are several ways to protect yourself and mitigate the damages caused by flooding:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n\n<li>Contact your insurer to check your coverage in the event of backflow, groundwater infiltration, and a river overflowing.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n<li>If your home is on a floodplain: During the spring freshet, arrange your basement in such a way that objects of value are high off the floor, or bring them up to ground level, if possible.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Regularly clean your gutters to ensure proper rainwater drainage, and direct them toward a permeable surface, such as your lawn.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Clear any obstacles to the evaluation of water through the sewer inlets and drains (ice, branches, leaves, etc.).&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Check to make sure that your sump pump is working properly and your sewer check valve is watertight.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Prepare your<a href=\"https:\/\/www.laval.ca\/en\/public-security\/emergency-measures-civil-security\/disaster-preparedness\/how-prepare-for-disaster\/\"> family safety plan<\/a> and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.laval.ca\/en\/public-security\/emergency-measures-civil-security\/disaster-preparedness\/how-prepare-for-disaster\/\">ready-to-go emergency bag<\/a> in the event that you must evacuate. Also keep on hand all the items you need to ensure your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.laval.ca\/en\/public-security\/emergency-measures-civil-security\/disaster-preparedness\/how-prepare-for-disaster\/\">autonomy for a minimum period of 72 hours<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Safely store objects that could be swept away by the current (garden furniture, dock, etc.).&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Find out in advance where you can find refuge\u202f(with family, friends, etc.).&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Protect building entrances (windows, doors, garage, etc.) by creating a dike (low wall) using sandbags.\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.laval.ca\/Documents\/Pages\/Fr\/Citoyens\/police-securite-civile-et-urgences-sociales\/securite-civile\/muret.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">How to build a low wall<\/a> (PDF, 558 KB \u2013 in French). Keep the photos in a secure cloud storage service or on a USB key kept outside of your home.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><\/section>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"wp-block-vortex-blocks-accordion-item accordion ac\" id=\"strongwhat-to-do-in-case-of-a-flood-strong\"><div class=\"accordion__accordion\"><button class=\"accordion__header-row accordion-toggle ac-header ac-trigger\"><p class=\"accordion__header__title\"><strong>What to do in case of a flood?<\/strong><\/p><span class=\"accordion__header__icon\" role=\"presentation\"><span class=\"plus\"><\/span><\/span><\/button><div class=\"accordion__sub-rows wysiwyg ac-panel\" role=\"region\">\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Contact 911 to report a situation in which the life, health and safety of a person is threatened.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If the situation is serious, leave your home before the streets become impassable. In doing so, you won\u2019t have to drive through floodwaters.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Shut off the power if water begins to rise close to electrical components.\u202fWhen cutting the power, make sure your feet are on a dry surface and use a wooden stick to cut the power and thus avoid contact with the electrical panel.\u200b If necessary, contact a master electrician.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Shut off the main natural gas inlet as well as the valves on propane and fuel oil tanks. Make sure that they are solidly anchored to the ground if there is a risk that they will be flooded.\u200b&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Electrical installations that come into contact with water may pose a risk of electrocution or fire. <strong>Immediately notify Hydro-Qu\u00e9bec, which will cut the power.&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stay away from downed power lines and wires, even if there is a power outage.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If water backs up from the floor drain or the sewer pipes, block the inlets with a cloth.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you don\u2019t own a pair of tall boots, avoid walking in floodwaters, as they can be dangerous and contaminated.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You can install pumps to evacuate the water from your home or the edge of your sandbag dike. When first turning on the tap, let the water run for a few minutes. Check to make sure that the well water is safe before drinking it.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Disinfect objects, foods and medications that come into contact with flood waters.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have the electrical installations and heating appliances checked by a master electrician before reconnecting them.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Watch for the presence of mould. If necessary, call upon a specialized company.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Draw up an inventory of the damages and take photos clearly demonstrating the height that the water reached, then inform your insurer and the \u200b\u200bCity of Laval.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Quickly demolish and decontaminate the parts of your house that have been flooded in order to avoid mould. If necessary, call upon a specialized company.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check if you are eligible for the <a a home, it is important to act quickly to limit the formation of mould, as its dispersal into the air can lead to health problems.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Be careful for the:<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Smell of mould, earth or alcohol.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Signs of spotting (green or black) on the walls or ceilings, in the that is damaged must take the necessary measures, without delay, to secure the premises and avoid mould.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No construction permit is required to remove finishing materials (e.g., floating floors or door frames) affected by flooding.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Some work, such as painting, does not require a permit, since it is considered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.laval.ca\/Pages\/Fr\/Citoyens\/cdu-renovation-reparation-residentielle.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">maintenance work<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If monitored? The City of Laval has installed 14 telemetric stations at strategic locations around \u00cele J\u00e9sus. These stations monitor water levels and issue alerts.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A camera was also installed to monitor certain situations. These data are not available in real time,\u202fas they must first be validated and interpreted.
