    Seasonal Parking

In the winter of 2021-2022, the City of Laval adopted a new approach to managing on-street parking during the winter. In concrete terms, seasonal alternate parking, in most cases, is required only during maintenance operations.

In order to successfully implement this approach, new road signs have been added to seasonal alternate parking signs in specific areas. These signs specify that alternate parking is applicable solely during maintenance operations.

Thus, if there are no maintenance operations in progress in the areas where this signage is in place, residents will be permitted to park on both sides of the street throughout the winter. However, when maintenance operations are carried out, alternate parking will apply, and compliance with the signage in place will be required.

Important: some streets, such as narrower streets, streets with bicycle lanes, and streets in school or park zones, have different signage. Please be sure to properly read the signs before parking, and keep an eye out for other parking restrictions that may remain in effect (due to the presence of bus stops, fire hydrants, etc.).

When in doubt or by choice, residents who continue to practice alternate seasonal parking on a continuous basis will not be considered at fault.

There are several ways that Laval residents can find out if maintenance operations are in progress. It is important not to rely solely on what is visible on the street, and to use the information sources cited below.

Outside the periods indicated on the signage

When operations are required outside of the times indicated on the existing signage, temporary signs will be installed to inform residents about the restrictions in place.

Removable signs placed on snowbanks or orange signs take precedence over permanent signs during snow-blowing operations.

    History of the project

The City of Laval tabled its parking policy in 2019. This policy marks a significant shift in regards to the use of parking and single-occupant vehicles within Laval city limits.

In this policy, which resulted from a wide-ranging public consultation, the elimination of seasonal alternate parking on residential streets is identified as a significant and priority action.

The adoption of this new approach follows pilot projects carried out over a period of two winters, during which various parking management solutions were tested in specific neighbourhoods.

This transitional solution will be replaced gradually with LED panels in the coming years. LED signage will make it possible to practice dynamic parking management year-round, based on maintenance activities.
