    Hedge, Fence, Sleeper Wall and Retaining Wall

    The City of Laval has set out regulations concerning sleeper walls and retaining walls so as to promote visual harmony in residential areas. These regulations mainly concern materials, placement and the authorized heights for these types of constructions on residential property.

    Hedges

    A permit is not required to plant hedges.

    Fences

    A construction-improvement permit is not required to add or modify a fence, except in the following cases:

    Sleeper wall

    A construction-improvement permit is not required to add or modify a sleeper wall, except in the following cases:

    Retaining wall

    A permit is required to add or modify a retaining wall.

    Apply for a permit

    1. Consult the Info-règlements tool (in French) to find out about the different standards and/or if your property is subject to a PIIA.

      If your property is subject to a PIIA, consult the page on the site planning and architectural integration plan (PIIA) before continuing with the following steps.
    2. Make sure you have all the required documents before submitting your application.

    3. Submit your application through the city’s online permit application portal.
    4. After submitting your permit application, you will receive an email on the status of your application within 5 business days.
      • If your application is complete: You will receive a file number and an account statement to pay upon receipt.

        If you have not received your file number and account status in your email, please check your junk mail box.

      • If your application is incomplete: You will receive a notice of refusal of your application, with the list of missing documents.

        You must then submit a new application with all the required documents.
    5. Pay the permit application fee through the online permit payment portal.

      You will receive your permit by email.
    If you do not have a computer, you can submit your request in person by reserving a time slot.
